Does MT4 Have a Gap Indicator?
Updated 1 November 2026 · 6 min read

Type "gap indicator mt4" into Google and you'll find plenty of free downloads, but half of them are not for the gap you think you're looking at. If you just want to see the price jump that happens after the weekend or at the daily rollover, here's what MT4 actually gives you, what the download sites are really offering, and a free way to see the gap on your own chart today.
Does MT4 have a gap indicator built in?
No. MetaTrader 4's own help documentation lists every indicator that ships with the platform: Moving Average, MACD, RSI, Bollinger Bands, Ichimoku, Parabolic SAR, and over twenty others. None of them flags a session gap. Anything that marks a gap on your chart, by name or by arrow, is a custom indicator someone else wrote and you install yourself; MT4 does not come with one.
Why most "gap indicator mt4" results aren't what you're looking for
Search the exact phrase and a large share of the results are not about the gap you see after the weekend. They're about the Fair Value Gap (FVG), a concept from the ICT/SMC school of trading. The two share a name and nothing else:
| Price gap (what GapEdge tracks) | Fair Value Gap (FVG) | |
|---|---|---|
| When it forms | Between one session's close and the next session's open | Mid-session, within a three-candle sequence |
| Needs a market close? | Yes, a real break in trading | No, can form while the market is open |
| What it looks like | A jump you can see on a Daily or Weekly chart | A gap in the range between candle 1 and candle 3 on any timeframe |
If you typed "gap indicator mt4" because your chart showed a jump on Monday morning or after a public holiday, you want the first row, not the second. Most of the top search results, and most of the free MT4 indicators sold under this name, are built for the second.
How to see a gap on your MT4 chart for free
You don't need any indicator to see the gap itself:
- Open the pair on MT4 and switch the timeframe to Weekly (W1) to see the weekend gap, or Daily (D1) to see the rollover gap at the broker's server-time candle open.
- Find the candle that opens the new week (or new day) and the candle right before it.
- Compare the previous candle's close to the new candle's open. If they're different prices, that's the gap. MT4 doesn't draw a line for it, but the candles show it without any plugin.
This works on any broker's MT4 or MT5 install, and it costs nothing. The only thing it doesn't do is alert you the moment the gap forms, since you have to open the chart and look.
If you still want an indicator
Third-party indicators that mark gaps automatically do exist, often under names like "Gap Finder" or "NWOG/NDOG" (New Week Opening Gap, New Day Opening Gap: the same price jump this guide covers, under an ICT-style label). They run as code inside your trading terminal, so before installing one, know what it actually does and only take it from a source you trust. A download page that only tells you to install and restart the platform, with no explanation of what the indicator checks, is not enough to go on.
What GapEdge data shows
GapEdge solves the "I have to remember to look" problem by tracking gaps for you. Since Dec 2025, it has tracked 167 gaps across gold, EUR/USD and GBP/USD, with 99.4% filling and 58% doing so within an hour. On gold specifically, GapEdge has tracked 93 gaps with a 100.0% fill rate and a median fill time of 50m; EUR/USD has seen 22 tracked gaps and GBP/USD 52. See every gap it has tracked, filled or not, in the Gap Explorer.
How GapEdge helps
Instead of switching your MT4 chart to Weekly every Sunday night to check, GapEdge sends a push alert the moment a gap opens on gold, EUR/USD or GBP/USD, with the gap's zone and size, then tracks the fill live. No indicator to install, no chart to remember to open.
Common mistakes
- Installing an FVG indicator expecting a session gap tool. Check the product description names "fair value gap" or "FVG" before installing; it's a different pattern from the one you're after.
- Reading the gap in the wrong time zone. MT4's Daily candle opens at your broker's server time, not UTC, so the "daily rollover gap" you see can look like it happens at a different hour than another trader's chart. For the exact weekend reopen time in UTC, see What time does the forex market open on Sunday?
- Installing an unfamiliar indicator without checking what it does. A gap is simple enough to see by eye on two timeframes; there's rarely a need to run someone else's untested code just to look at it.
This guide is for education only and is not financial advice. Trading leveraged products carries a high risk of loss.

Questions traders ask
Does MT4 have a gap indicator built in?
No. MetaTrader 4's own help pages list every built-in technical indicator, from Moving Average to the Parabolic SAR, and none of them is a gap tool. Any indicator that flags a gap is a third-party add-on you install yourself.
What is the difference between a fair value gap and a price gap?
A price gap, the one GapEdge tracks, is a jump between one session's close and the next session's open, with no trading in between: the kind you see after the weekend or at the daily rollover. A fair value gap (FVG) is a different idea from the ICT/SMC school: a three-candle pattern that can form mid-session in a market that never closed. Same word, two unrelated things.
How do I see a weekend gap on my MT4 chart without installing anything?
Switch the chart to the Weekly (W1) timeframe and compare Friday's closing candle to the candle that opens the new week. The difference between that close and that open is the gap, visible on a stock chart with no plugin.
Is it safe to download a free gap indicator for MT4?
A custom indicator is code that runs inside your trading terminal, so only install one from a source you actually trust, and know what it claims to do before you add it to a live chart. If you just want to see the gap, the manual method above needs no download at all.
What do NWOG and NDOG mean?
New Week Opening Gap and New Day Opening Gap: the names some third-party indicators and ICT-school material use for the weekend gap and the daily rollover gap. They describe the same price jump this guide covers, under different labels.
Does MT5 have a gap indicator?
MT5 is a separate platform, and this guide doesn't check its full built-in indicator list. What does carry over is the manual method: switch to D1 or W1 and compare one candle's close to the next one's open, which works the same way regardless of platform.
Is there a way to get an alert instead of checking the chart myself?
Yes: that is what an app like GapEdge is for. It watches gold, EUR/USD and GBP/USD and sends a push alert the moment a gap opens, so you don't have to switch timeframes and look yourself.
